Helping a healthcare organisation deliver cancer care technology via the cloud
“Every single person in CNS has such a can-do attitude. They are incredibly responsive. Their expertise in security, systems and operations is something I would expect from a technology company of their calibre, but their can-do attitude is what I love about them.”

Detailed Case study
Challenge
Doubling down on Cloud
For almost half a century, Elekta has been delivering precision radiotherapy hardware and software to healthcare facilities around the world. Traditionally, their software was installed manually, on-premises, by Elekta’s specialty technicians. As well as being a time-consuming process, there was a risk individual devices would be vulnerable to a security breach, or not adhere with compliance or governance requirements.
Since 2017, Elekta has offered its software via the cloud – though the majority of installations were still conducted on-premises. Recently, the business made the decision to scale up its cloud-based offering with a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution. This would enable the remote and continual provisioning of updates, and would also streamline installation and management efforts for Elekta’s team.
To support the growth of its SaaS model, Elekta needed a fully optimised and operational cloud environment and so sought the assistance of CNS.
The Solution
As a long-standing technology partner, CNS already had an in-depth understanding of the Elekta business. The team worked together to configure a cloud environment that would meet Elekta’s needs, and CNS was engaged to support and maintain this environment on an ongoing basis. This includes managing essential updates, responding to potential issues, ensuring compliance and security protection, and putting systems in place for rapid incident recovery.
CNS also plays a key role in getting new hospital sites deployed so that physicians and clinical staff can access their critical data and software from the cloud, as well as helping Elekta provide data for audit and compliance purposes .
“Our team is really joined at the hip when it comes to getting new sites set up and deployed,” says Kimberley Bain, Elekta’s Cloud Program Manager. “When a new contract is signed we work together to gather requirements in terms of the healthcare organisation’s needs. We used to do this ourselves, but it became too unwieldy operating on a global scale. CNS are right there with us, and with resources located in each region, even do a lot of the set-up independently.”
The Results
Scaling Global Cloud growth together CNS and Elekta
“With CNS by our side, we have been able to really ramp-up our SaaS offering. Previously, we were deploying our equipment and software at two new sites per month. Now, we’re looking at deploying four new sites per week, or 16 per month, globally. This is huge growth,” says Kimberley.
Backed by a reliable and trusted cloud partner, Elekta has been able to grow the SaaS aspect of its business with confidence––ensuring healthcare facilities around the world have reliable, 24/7 access to potentially life-saving technology.
CNS supports multiple thousands of concurrent Citrix users per month, helping oncology clinical staff to be able to access Elekta’s native applications.
Under the support and monitoring there are also thousands of virtual machines within the environment, which is constantly growing.
This support is also provided across seven regions (soon to be nine), with CNS staff providing ‘follow the sun’ support, delivering 24x7 support regardless of the region users are in.
Providing information for auditing and compliance purposes is also now much simpler, as all data is centralised in the cloud.
